How do I manage the Postini filtering service for my account?

Note: This FAQ is intended for account owners who have authority over the email service for their entire domain. If you do not have access to the "postmaster" account in your domain, this information will be of little use to you.

Account administrators, please read this entire FAQ. It contains information that can affect your billing.

Just as with your CommuniGate mail service, you can (and will sometimes need to) handle administrative functions for the Postini filtering service on your domain. As with CommuniGate, the administrative account is "postmaster@yourdomain." Unlike CommuniGate, however, the Postmaster password is generated automatically by Postini and mailed to your postmaster address. So the first thing to do is check your postmaster mailbox and retrieve that password.

The Postini system is useful and fairly powerful, but it is also somewhat complicated. Most detailed instructions will be given in separate FAQ's; simply browse the topics at http://www.forest.net/support/faqs/postini/ for information on what you want to accomplish. This FAQ simply gives you a basic overview.

To log into the Postini admin interface, go to http://login.postini.com/. Enter "postmaster@yourdomain" as the username (naturally, substitute your actual domain for "yourdomain"), and the password you received from Postini in your postmaster mailbox. Upon successful login, you'll be offered a choice to go to the message center or to system administration; choose the latter. If you don't remember your Postini postmaster password, please see I forgot or don't have my Postini password -- what do I do?

You will now see a heading on the left labeled "Organizations." Underneath should be any organizations you have authority over (usually, only one). Click on the organization, and you're into the admin interface.

Most of what you'll want to do can be accomplished under the "Users" and "Helpdesk" links. Use "Users" to add and delete users, or to edit a user's settings. Use "Helpdesk" to change a user's password, suspend a user, etc. For more information, please see the following FAQs:

"Helpdesk" functions:

Some general but important things to be aware of:

First, your account will be billed $1 per filtered address per month based on reporting from Postini. Postini doesn't care if the address points to an actual mailbox on the CommuniGate server, or an alias, or a forwarder. It will count them all separately. However, there are ways to handle this to reduce your costs; see information in a separate FAQ on managing aliases in Postini.

Second, while adding an address to CommuniGate will cause Postini to automatically create a corresponding address, removing an address from CommuniGate will not cause the corresponding address to be removed from Postini. This is important, because if you do not remember to delete the address from Postini when you delete it from CommuniGate, you will continue to be charged $1/month for the Postini address.

Third, if you have set up a "group" in CommuniGate, or if you use our Mailman mailing list service, you will certainly want to disable filtering on any address associated with the group or list. Very strange things, confusing to the recipients of your group or list, can happen if filtering is enabled on these addresses.

So, please look through our Postini FAQ's for more specific information, and feel free to open a support ticket if you have further questions.
