SPF Records

SPF records are used to reduce "backscatter" from spam that is sent with forged addresses. They have not really achieved widespread acceptance yet, are not without problems, but they can help reduce so-called "Joe Job" spam.

Creating an SPF Record
Customers must create their own SPF records. digital.forest cannot know everything about the way you send out your mail. Use the SPF Setup Wizard to create your SPF record. Make certain you include any server that needs to be able to send out mail from your domain. Do you have an employee who sends mail from home using your domain and needs to use his ISP's mail server to do so? You must include his ISP's SMTP servers in the record. Once you have created the record, open a ticket on our Helpdesk system and paste the record into the ticket; we will add it to your DNS records.
Potential Problems
As support for SPF is not universal, SPF can sometimes break forwarded mail. For instance, if mail is sent from one mail server (whether it supports SPF or not) to another mail server (that does not support SPF forwarding rewrites), and the second server is configured to forward to an address at a third server (that checks SPF records), the third server will see that the second server is not on the approved sender list for the domain, and reject the mail. Make certain this is a risk you are willing to take before setting up an SPF record for your domain.
